Building on the success of the Best Practices in Intergenerational Programming Project, The Lifestyle Information Network (LIN) received funding from the Ministry of Health Promotion’s Communities in Action Fund (CIAF) to develop Guidelines for Intergenerational Physical Activity Programs.
Recognizing an opportunity for intergenerational programs to support generations being physically active together, work got underway to research, write and disseminate a new guide to implementing intergenerational physical activity.
In keeping with the movement toward healthier and active lifestyles, it is strongly encouraged that these guidelines be shared, discussed and applied within various organizations and communities, with an aim to increase physical activity for all children, youth, adults and older adults.
Included in the document are nine key guidelines to address in the design, implementation and evaluation of intergenerational physical activity programs. What is essential to all IGPA programs is that there is an opportunity for fun, safe and active participation by all.
We hope that these guidelines will advance program development, increase interest and support for IGPA programs, add to the collection of successful IG programs and most importantly, increase physical activity levels among all generations by connecting them to new IGPA programs in their community.
Why consider planning and implementing an IGPA program?
- Acceptance and respect between generations
- Opens doors for new connections and future program opportunities
- Increased physical activity and movement
Programmers told us:
- “A well rounded program for both generations to engage in.”
- “A purposeful opportunity to interact in a physical and social activity.”
- “A positive response from community for this format.”
- “The ability to move without worry by having a younger generation around to participate with. They were ‘doing it’ without thinking about it, they were moving!”
Why consider participating in an IGPA program?
- Have fun
- Try new activities
- Express yourself through physical activity
- Increase energy
- Increase self esteem and confidence
Participants told us:
- “Had fun to play with young and old and cooperate”
- “I felt energetic and upbeat”
- “Movement of any kind is beneficial”
Overall, participants felt that IGPA programs helped them to become more physically active!
